Gate Lodge On Mount Austin Rd Was Built Between 1900 & 1902
If you like the outdoors, panoramic views and history then the former Mountain Lodge site is a must visit while you're in Hong Kong. This is Gate Lodge, the entrance and former keeper of Mountain Lodge's living quarters. The lodge was built in a Renaissance style architecture between 1900 and 1902 and was later declared as a public monument in 1995. Exploring the grounds and outside of Gate Lodge is free to the public. The inside of the building isn't accessible to the public though.
Once your exploration of Gate Lodge is over you can then wander a little further up Mount Austin Road to the former Mountain Lodge site and enjoy the views over Kowloon and the islands of Lamma and Lantau. There is also a small shop here and a larger pavilion which offers some respite from the sun on those hot Hong Kong days.
Another free public facility at the top of Mount Austin Road is Victoria Peak Gardens which used to be the former Governor's private gardens but are now a public green park. The peak gardens welcome families, couples, friends and even pets which is quite unusual for public open spaces in Hong Kong.
