Gate Lodge Is A Monument On Mount Austin Road

Gate Lodge is on Mount Austin Road in Hong Kong and was the living quarters of the former Mountain Lodge staff. Mountain Lodge was the summer house of the Governor of Hong Kong until World War II when is was bombed by the Japanese and then later demolished. These days the former Mountain Lodge site is a free public viewing platform, and with Victoria Peak Gardens right next door the site has much to offer for a quiet, enjoyable day out in Hong Kong.

Gate Lodge is a Renaissance style building and was declared as a public monument in 1995 having been originally constructed between 1900 and 1902. The staff and caretakers of Victoria Peak Gardens use Gate Lodge as a storage facility now so it isn't accessible inside but you can still explore the outside of this interesting and historic building that is part of Hong Kong's long and detailed history.

Once you have finished exploring Gate Lodge, panoramic views to the west of Hong Kong Island await you just a couple of minutes walk up Mount Austin Road at the former Mountain Lodge site.
